CHEF MEETS PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE
by Gladys Neigel
“Let every worker in the Master’s vineyard, study, plan, devise methods, to reach the people where they are.” This statement in Evangelism, page 122, is the foundation for health ministry work in Florida Conference says Director Joe Holloway. One of his volunteer health presenters, Chef Julio Barillas, recently put this statement to the test.
While attending a meeting in Winter Park, Fla., Barillas met an Adventist woman who worked at a Social Security Administration office. Her supervisor invited him to present a health lecture during their Wednesday training slot at the office. Holloway accompanied Barillas to the appointment where they set up a sales display of MagaBooks and cookbooks.
The seminar was well received. Since that time, Barillas has spoken at two other Social Security Administration offices. His program is different than usual. He believes a person is more motivated to get involved if a spiritual message accompanies the health message.
Barillas is one of three volunteer health communicators who are available to present health programs throughout Florida Conference.
