January 12

January 12, 2024 , 8:00 am - 4:35 pm

Spanish
Friday, January 12 – Job 11, 12

Study questions:
    1. As Zophar enters the dialogue, what does he say to Job about the abundance of words in relation to vindication? Job 11:2
    2. Although unjustly reprimanded by his friends, how does Job recognize divine wisdom in creation? Job 12:7-9
    3. In whom, says Job, are science and intelligence found? Job 12:12

Commentary and reflection:
Zophar seems to think that Job has talked a lot, and it bothers him. The premise of his speech is the same as that of his friends, Eliphaz and Bildad, “if something bad happens to you it is because you are a sinner and God is punishing you”.

The disciples expressed the same idea when they asked Jesus,
Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. John 9:1-3
About Zophar’s speech, the SDA Bible Commentary says,
“Zophar’s eulogy regarding God is superb. His sincerity is obvious. But he, like Job’s other friends, misunderstands the providence of God. He is unable to conceive of suffering except as direct punishment for sin. He calls on Job for repentance, when he should bring him love and comfort. The speeches of Job’s friends have been compared to wheels, revolving on the same axle. They vary in detail, but agree in basic sentiment.” SDABC Job 11:20
Unlike what Job’s friends, the disciples, and some of us think today, bad things happen to people because we live in a world of sin where death reigns. Some time ago a father told me about his son, who was born with a serious illness, that his son was suffering for sins that he had committed, that God was punishing him through his son’s illness. This thought, caused by a father’s pain, comes from a misunderstanding of the character of God and the nature of sin.
When someone is going through sorrow, the last thing they need is advice and sermons, no matter how good they are. What is required is a friendly hand to hold and comfort.
Faith needs to be exercised, trusting that The Lordh loves us and that He is with us. When Jesus comes, he will put an end to this world’s conflict between good and evil, He will destroy the enemy and sin, and He will restore God’s original plan for creation. Then, peace and justice will be restored to this world.
May God’s blessings be with you on this day.
