January 15

January 15, 2024 , 8:00 am - 4:35 pm

Spanish
Monday, January 15 – Job 17, 18

Study questions:
    1. How is Job feeling because of his friends’ lack of understanding? Job 17:1,2
    2. What request does Job make of God? Job 17:3
    3. How much did his friends understand Job’s pain? Job 18:1-4
Commentary and reflection:
Job was going through such great pain that no one can even imagine. The feeling of loss is very painful and even more so when losses come together. It’s hard to lose a child, but Job lost 10, at the same time! He lost all his possessions as well and lost even the support of his wife. During all these losses, he felt alone. Going through the stages of grief, denial, negotiation, and anger, he thought life could not possibly get worse.; but he was wrong.

Come into the scene some characters, called his “friends”, who may have been the ones who inspired the popular proverb, “with friends like these, who needs enemies?” Job needed company, not the arrogance of his so-called friends. Far from helping him, they made things worse.
Chapter 17 is an imprecation and chapter 18 is the defense of someone who has no arguments or humility to recognize that, as a friend, he was not helping.
Sometimes I wonder, what kind of friend am I? What kind of friend do I want to be? What kind of friend do others see in me?
In times of mourning and grief, I want to be the friend who is there, not the friend who talks, but the friend who walks along and that is willing to give. In times of illness, I want to be the friend who sustains with his presence, and who understands the hurt.
What kind of friend do you want to be? There is someone who needs a friend. Will you be ready?
Remember or listen again to the beautiful words of the song “Friends” by Michael W. Smith,

“And friends are friends forever
If the Lord’s the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
‘Cause the welcome will not end
Though it’s hard to let you go”
In the Father’s hands we know
That a lifetime’s not too long
To live as friends”

May God give you a blessed day.
