January 16

January 16, 2024 , 8:00 am - 4:35 pm

Spanish
Tuesday, January 16 – Job 19, 20

Study questions:
    1. How does Job react to his friend’s accusations? Job 19:1-5
    2. Due to the tradition of his time, who does Job blame for his problems? Job 19:6-12
    3. How does Job express the pain for his loss? Job 19:13-20
    4. Despite the influence of tradition on him, Job had a clear understanding of end times theology, how does he demonstrate it? Job 19:25-27
Commentary and reflection:
It is very easy to point out other people’s faults and sins. Job was being accused by his friends of being a sinner. If we feel that we must reprimand someone, we must make sure that we are confronting out of love for them, not because we are angry, uncomfortable, or because we are looking for someone to blame.

Job’s strong emotions clouded his understanding.
“He felt that God was treating him as an enemy when, in reality, God was his friend and held him in high esteem.
His enemy was Satan, not God. It was common for people of his time to think that both, good and evil, came from God. They also thought that people were totally responsible for their own destiny. However, the evil power that is at large in this world is to blame for suffering.” Daily Living Bible Commentary.
Here is the heart of the book of Job,
25 For I know that my Redeemer lives,
And He shall stand at last on the earth;
26 And after my skin is [f]destroyed, this I know,
That in my flesh I shall see God,
27 Whom I shall see for myself,
And my eyes shall behold, and not another.
How my [g]heart yearns within me! Job 19:25-27
These words beautifully express Job’s faith, which is the faith of all those who, despite the injustices of sin, trust in God’s grace. His faith is even more surprising considering that his understanding of the theology of suffering was very clouded by tradition. He thought that it was God who was the cause of his misfortune.
“When the book of Job was written, Israel did not have a well-developed doctrine of the resurrection. In fact, they were still slaves in Egypt, and Moses was still in Midian.” CDLB
Even though Job struggled with the idea that God was against him, he firmly believed that in the end, He would be on his side. He was one of the first to speak about the resurrection. He said with confidence,
“in my flesh I shall see God”.
Hold on this day to the faith in the Almighty. For very soon, when Jesus comes, he will put an end to the injustices of sin. You can repeat with Job, “For I know that my Redeemer lives”.
May you have a very blessed day.
