LAUDERHILL ADVENTURER AND PATHFINDER CLUBS HONOR WWII VETERAN
During the July 4 weekend, World War II veteran Vincent Ferriero, accompanied by his son, James, joined the Sabbath worship services at Lauderhill Church where members thanked Ferriero for his service to the country and presented a plaque to him.
The Lauderhill Pioneer Adventurer and Pathfinder Clubs chose to honor Ferriero by raising funds and sending him to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Upon his return, a contingent of uniformed Adventurers and Pathfinders met and welcomed the 89-year-old-war veteran at the airport.
For the past four years, the clubs served war veterans in surrounding communities by donating food items, books, holiday cards, and care packages to the William Bill Kling VA Clinic in Sunrise, Florida.
Vincent Ferriero enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 and was assigned to the USS Saint Paul. Near the end of WWII, the vessel fired the last naval salvos on the shores of Japan before the surrender of the Japanese. The crew members then served as occupational forces on the shores of Japan until the United States Army came to relieve them.
While serving in the US Navy, Ferriero earned the Victory Medal, Occupational Medal, Asiatic-Pacific 1 Star Medal, and the American Theatre Medal.
